Palma Azzurra: a one-of-a-kind prehistoric gem
Encephalartos lehmanni
With its elegant foliage shimmering in silvery-blue hues, Encephalartos lehmanni, commonly known as the Palma Azzurra, is one of the rarest and most captivating specimens in our acclimatization garden. This plant, among the oldest in Europe, is a true living relic from the age of the dinosaurs, dating back over 200 million years. Native to South Africa, it belongs to a primitive family of plants of which only a few individuals remain in the wild today, many of them endangered. Its sculptural form, the extraordinarily rare color of its fronds, and its millennia-old history make it one of the most iconic wonders to discover for those staying on Elba Island.
